Official Guide to ABA-Approved JD Programs

The JD Program

By design, our law school is one of the smallest in the country. We take pride in providing the personal attention few schools can match, a focus on hands-on learning, and a world-class faculty drawn to our incredible setting on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

We believe it鈥檚 time to reimagine what a law school can be. This means engaging with communities outside of our building and outside our comfort zones. It means renewing our commitment to public service, and standing up for justice, rather than watching from a safe distance. It means collaborating with other institutions of higher education, industry, and nonprofit organizations to help solve complex problems, from economic development in rural Maine, to civil rights in developing nations. It鈥檚 a vision that calls on us to break down old barriers.

This expansive approach to legal education is connecting Maine Law to new public and private partners throughout Maine, New England, and beyond. For our graduates, it鈥檚 an approach that translates into more opportunities.

From the moment of enrollment, we focus on developing your pathways to employment. You will have access to one-on-one support from faculty, staff, and mentors throughout your time at Maine Law, and the backing of a strong alumni network for the duration of your career. And you will practice socially responsible entrepreneurism as well as lawyering, while obtaining the tools you need to be a leader in the legal profession, in public or non-governmental organizations, in private industry, in pursuit of the public interest, or any other field of your choosing.

Clinics and Centers

The Clinics at Maine Law, established in 1970 as the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, are among the oldest in the nation. A defining program of Maine Law, the Clinics provide law students with practical skills training and they help fulfill the school鈥檚 long-standing commitment to social justice.

The mission of the Clinics is to train the next generation of lawyers by promoting access to justice while meeting the acute needs of vulnerable communities. The Clinics provide free legal aid services to over 600 low-income individuals and families annually through its six programs, which include the General Practice Clinic, the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic, the Rural Practice Clinic, the Prisoner Assistance Clinic, the Protection from Abuse Program, and the Youth Justice Clinic.

Working under the close supervision of clinical instructors and faculty members, student attorneys enrolled in clinical courses provide direct representation to their clients and gain hands-on lawyering skills conducting client interviews, filing court documents, and standing before a judge. All clinical students are also required to participate in 鈥淟awyering Skills for Clinical Practice,鈥 a semester-long seminar designed to complement and support their case work.

The centers at Maine Law 鈥 the Center for Law and Innovation, Center for Oceans and Coastal Law and the Center for Youth Policy and Law 鈥 drive research and public policy development in Maine and beyond, engaging legal scholars and public policy experts from all over the world. The centers offer students the opportunity to put their education into practice by participating in projects and initiatives to research critical legal matters, engage with the legislative process, and advance policy solutions.

Externships

At Maine Law, students are guaranteed a clinical or externship experience.

Maine Law鈥檚 Externship Program allows students to work alongside seasoned attorneys and judges for academic credit. Depending on the placement, students in the Externship Program handle advocacy, policy, regulatory enforcement, and transactional legal matters, and may have the opportunity to practice as a student attorney during their third year of law school. Students in the Externship Program receive valuable feedback and mentoring from their placement supervisors 鈥 who are experienced judges and lawyers 鈥 and also from the Externship Professor and Director.

Recent externship placements include:

  • Corporate: Geiger; The Jackson Laboratory (JAX); WEX; Match Group LLC, InterMed
